Giving Back to our Community

As The Motorcycle Lawyer, it's my job to help bikers in need. On top of that, my team and I are always looking for ways to give back to the community. That's why we recently decked out our truck in sweet Halloween style, put on costumes, and handed out candy to over 300 kids during Methodist Children's Home Society's annual Trunk or Treat event! It was a cold day, but it warmed our hearts to see all the kids having a great time in their costumes. Way to go team!

Helmet Laws in Michigan

Tracking SB 527

Are mandatory helmet laws making a comeback in Michigan? At the end of September, Senator Rebekah Warren (D-Ann Arbor) sponsored a Bill (SB 527) proposing the reinstatement of mandatory helmet laws for all motorcyclists riding in Michigan. The bill has been referred to the Committee on Transportation. You can read my press release about this Bill by clicking here.

Governor Rick Snider signed a repeal of Michigan's mandatory helmet law back in 2012. Currently, motorcyclists (and passengers) can ride without a helmet in Michigan as long as they:

Are 21 or older
Carry at least $20,000 in first-party medical insurance
Have had their motorcycle endorsement (CY) for at least two years, OR
Got their CY endorsement by completing a certified rider training course.

If SB 527 is passed into law, all motorcyclists would be required to wear a helmet while riding… no exceptions. In addition, moped riders under the age of 19 would have to wear a helmet to ride on any road.

This isn't the first time a bill has proposed to reinstate mandatory helmet laws. A similar bill was put forward in 2014, but didn't make it past Committee. My team and I will be watching this and other motorcycle-relevant bills; stay up-to-date by visiting our website or following us on Facebook.

2015 Scholarship Winning Entries

Creativity Takes All

Once again this year, we were blown away by the creativity of medical and legal students who entered our scholarship contest. We received essays of course, but also poems, songs, Mad Libs, and many other interesting entries. The two that stood out the most, however, were submitted by Spring Stonebraker (Nursing, Eastern Michigan University) and Rikkilee Moser (Law, Northern Illinois University).

Spring submitted a beautifully made scrapbook titled “Unintended Consequences”, which provided a discussion of the impact of Michigan's Religious Freedom Restoration Act on healthcare in the state.

Rikkilee sent us an illustrated story showing how if Law and Medicine work together, they can save the world.

Both scholarship recipients will receive $1,000 (via their schools' financial aid office) towards their tuition. Our winners and some ‘honorable mentions' will be posted on our website soon.

We want to thank all the students who took the time to send in a creative entry. Keep up the good work!

Is Bolt Motorcycling's Next Big Thing?

Talk about crafty! A new San Francisco-based startup is hand-making electric motorcycles projected to sell for around $5,000. Nathan Jauvtis, professional tinkerer and co-founder of Bolt, came up with the idea to build a clean, fully electric motorcycle that is easy to ride and accessible to enthusiasts. He started working on Bolt in his garage and has now started taking reservations from buyers.

What sets Bolt apart from other bikes? For starters, you will use a smartphone app to start it, and the bike can be tracked via GPS locator should it ever go missing. Parents will even be able to set limits on Bolt's speed to protect teen riders from the temptations of fast riding.

Shopping for a Motorcycle at Costco?

Are you in the market for a new Victory motorcycle or Polaris powersport vehicle? Do you have a Costco membership? If so, you're in luck… Now you can pick out your new ride when you pick up bulk bagels and paper towels.

Costco itself isn't actually selling motorcycles; those sales are managed by dealers who participate in a partnership program with the wholesale chain (un-creatively named the Costco Auto Program).

The program isn't new, either. Victory and Polaris are joining Aprilia, BMW, Ducati, Honda, Husqvarna, Indian, Kawasaki, KTM, Moto Guzzi, MV Agusta, Spyder, Suzuki, Triumph, and Yamaha. As a matter of fact, a number of major car companies also participate in the Costco Auto Program, which Costco says sold about 350,000 vehicles last year.

Need for Speed: Racing Lawn Mowers

We've talked about a lot of powerful machines in our previous blog posts, from motocross to motorcycle ice racing to... lawn mowers?

Believe it or not, lawn mower racing is growing in popularity every year. Some people call it the "poor man's NASCAR", but most just call it fun. These racing machines aren't your average mowers, either: the blades are removed for safety, and everything from engine to body is customized for speed. Some racers will spend over $10,000 to get their machines ready; fortunately, as with NASCAR, many companies are willing to sponsor racers to help get them on the track.

Feel the Shift: Ashley Fiolek

July is Women's Motorcycle Month, a chance to celebrate women who ride.

Ashley Fiolek is not your typical motocross racer, and not because she's a woman. Ashley, a two-time women's motocross champion and two-time X Games gold medal winner, was born deaf. She doesn't let it slow her down.

Because she can't hear, Fiolek says that she had to learn to shift her bike by feel. She and her dad worked on it again and again, until feeling for the vibration of the bike became second nature, and she learned to fly. Shifting by feel is one thing, but not being able to hear other bikes on the track can make passing or moving laterally a huge challenge. To overcome it, Fiolek watches for shadows on the ground, and uses corners to check behind her to see if she can move. It seems like no obstacle is too difficult for Fiolek, who keeps racing, jumping, and winning.

While most motocross racers get a thrill from the noise on the track, Fiolek says that she feels at peace when she's racing. For her, racing is a chance to focus and be alone with her thoughts. “It calms me down,” she said in an ESPN interview. “It feels like you are flying.”

The Future of Motorcycle Safety

Did you know according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

- Motorcycles comprise only 2% of registered vehicles, but account for 5% of traffic fatalities annually?

- The fatality rate per miles traveled for motorcyclists is 16 times that of car occupants?

So what is exactly being done to combat these numbers?

Well, beginning last year, BMW and Honda began a vehicle to vehicle (V2V) study at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) to test and determine how cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles interact and react to V2V technology.

“Two tasks will be conducted in the Safety Pilot Model Deployment Geographic Area as a proof of concept for incorporating motorcycles into the connected vehicle environment. The two tasks are motorcycle communications feasibility testing and motorcycle-to-vehicle performance testing,” says a press release from Cohda Wireless, the cooperative intelligent transport systems hardware manufacturer supplying the V2V communications technology.

V2V communication would give all vehicles the ability to communicate with each other and increase the safety of all vehicles on the road.

“If a motorcycle can, via V2V communication, communicate with an approaching vehicle and ensure it doesn't turn left until the motorcycle has passed, that'll eliminate a huge cause of motorcycle accidents,” says an article from motorcycle.com. “And if V2V communication is constant (every minute of every day), the technology will [supersede] the responsibility of the car driver to be vigilant of motorcycles, effectively turning Motorcycle Safety Awareness from a month of observance to an unremitting affair.”

THE Motorcycle Lawyer's Top 5 Motorcycle Awareness Tips for Drivers

May is Motorcyle Awarness Month and although THE Motorcycle Lawyer encourages drivers to watch for motorcyclists every single day, he wants to honor this month by asking all drivers to observe these 5 tips:

#5: The road is not a race track. You have nothing to prove, so don't try. If you hurt or kill a motorcyclist because you were trying to challenge them with your car, you'll probably never forgive yourself. Remember, even the slightest contact with a motorcycle can be fatal, so don't risk it.

#4: Back it up! Following too close is a bad idea no matter what's in front of you, but it's especially dangerous if you're tailgating a motorcycle. There's no such thing as a minor “fender bender” if you hit a motorcycle, so please back off.

#3: Don't crowd a motorcyclist. Sometimes, bikers need to move laterally within a lane to avoid debris; stuff that wouldn't affect a car can be a big problem on a motorcycle. Motorcyclists have the right to use the entire lane… let them!

#2: Look, then look again. Be extra careful this time of year if you live in a colder climate; you might not be used to seeing motorcycles on the road again. Taking the time to double check before moving could be a life-or-death decision. Check your blind spots. Signal. In other words, be a good driver.

#1: See the motorcyclist. A motorcycle doesn't ride itself, there's a person on that bike; someone who has a family and a job and a reason to be on the road. See them, and do your part to keep them safe.

Introducing RYNO - The One-Wheeled Motorcycle

There are two-wheeled motorcycles, three-wheeled motorcycles and motorcycles with sidecars, but have you ever seen a one-wheeled motorcycle?

Well, you have now. This one-wheeled motorcycle prototype is called RYNO. It has been in construction for seven years by Chris Hoffman. RYNO is a single-wheeled, zero-emissions motorcycle that uses similar, but more advance technology as Segway.

Hoffman started developing RYNO after his daughter saw a one-wheeled motorcycle in a video game and asked if he could build one. And he did.

Even though RYNO is still a prototype, it may be available later this year. It will cost about $5,295 from a facility outside of Portland, Oregon. Hoffman and his team are in the process of gathering nationwide dealers who will allow potential customers to try out RYNO for themselves.

Be prepared: What to carry when you ride

Motorcycle accidents happen when you least expect it. Are you prepared? Do you carry a first-aid kit? You should.

Carrying a store bought first-aid is good idea, but sometimes motorcyclists need more. There are motorcycle-specific first-aid kits available; however, a first-aid kit can be made at home.

Even more important than carrying a first-aid kit is knowing how to use it and what to do in an emergency. Taking a motorcycle trauma class is the best way to be prepared in this situation. Accident Scene Management, Inc. (ASMI) offers classes with certified instructors to train motorcyclists on helmet removal, jaw thrust rescue breathing, movement and how to properly use the items in a first-aid kit.

Here are the top 10 items to carry in a first-aid kit:

1. Non-latex or nitrile (preferred) gloves (multiple pairs)

2. Trauma shears or scissors strong enough to cut through leather

3. Breathing barrier (with one-way valve)

4. Sterile gauze pads (assorted sizes)

5. Compression bandages (5 x 9 inches)

6. Band-Aids (assorted sizes)

7. Medical tape (10 yards x 1 inch)

8. Roller bandages

9. Hand sanitizer

10. Something to write on and with

If you have more room, the following items should be added:

11. Flashlight or head lamp and or/glow sticks

12. Saline solution

13. Antiseptic wipes

14. Emergency foil blanket

15. Antibiotic ointment

16. Aspirin

17. Non-aspirin

18. Hydrocortisone ointment

19. Burn gel

20. Tweezers

21. Instant cold compress

22. Splint

23. First aid instruction booklet

24. Splint (such as a wood tongue blade)

25. Powdered clotting agents

26. Glow sticks

27. Glucose/candy

28. Benadryl or other antihistamine

29. Oral thermometer (non-mercury/non-glass)

30. Tourniquet

Remember: first-aid and trauma kits need to be checked and updated regularly. Make sure to check expiration dates and batteries; replace any used or expired contents.

Motorcycles don't allow for a lot of carrying room. Decide what is important to you, how much you can fit, how long your trip is, how many people are riding in your group, etc. If you are riding in a group, maybe several riders could split first-aid items so everyone is prepared.

Hop on - How to Ride with a Passenger

Riding a motorcycle is an exhilarating experience, one that you want to share with others. However, riding with a passenger is a completely different experience than riding solo. You need to be prepared and experienced to safely carry a passenger. Here are some tips and advice on how to ride with a passenger:

1. Clothing – not optional.

Your passenger needs just as much protection as you. So all the same rules should still apply – helmet, body armor on all major points, gloves, foot and ankle protection.

2. Quotes to live-by:

-“Just sit still. If you have to move around, do so while we're cruising at a steady speed; moving our body weight is what steers the motorcycle. Especially when we're going between cars, just sit still.”

-“Hold on tight. Whether it's the grab rails or my waist, all that matters is that you feel secure. Support your weight under braking with a hand on the tank.”

-“In corners, just pretend you're a sack of potatoes. Don't jump around, just try and stay in-line with the bike's lean angle.”

-“If you're scared, tap me. If you want to pull over, tap me.” Then, really do pull over if they tap you. It's up to you to make them feel safe.

3. Practice the mount.

Sit on your bike and put in neutral. Stand up, with the bike held between your thighs, while holding the front brake. Your passenger should always mount on the left, without using the passenger peg as a step stool. However, be prepared for that because most passenger will use it anyway. Tell them to always wait for you to okay their mount or dismount.

4. Hold on.

The passenger should hold you around the waist or hips while riding. This is a good idea because it will encourage the rider to lean into corners with you. If your passenger can reach the tank, they should wrap one arm around your waist and use the other hand to hold onto the tank. Some rider's may prefer to hold on to the passenger's grab rail if the bike is equipped.

5. Dismount.

This should always be to the left, just like mounting. Make sure the passenger waits for you to okay the dismount. Tell them not to use the peg for a step stool. While stopped on a firm, level surface, brace the bike between your legs while standing to balance the bike while your passenger dismounts.

Passenger Rules:

- The passenger should not get on the bike until you have taken it off the stand and are secure in an upright position, using the front brake lever to prevent it from rolling.

- The passenger's feet should be kept on the foot pegs at all times, even while the bike is stopped.

- The passenger's feet should be kept away from all hot parts, especially the exhaust pipes.

- The passenger must sit behind you, on the passenger portion of the seat. If there is no passenger seat, there should be no passenger.

- Never seat a child on the gas tank in front of you: basically, a kid who can't reach the pillion foot pegs shouldn't be on the bike.

- Finally, the maximum capacity of a bike is two people.

More Tips:

- If you ride with passengers often, you may want to purchase passenger hand holds, either to wear or to attach to your motorcycle.

- Ask your passenger not to turn around or make any sudden movements

- Avoid high speeds or dramatic lean angles.

- If your passenger is able to reach the tank, they should use it to brace themselves when stopping or slowing.

- Keep in mind your stopping distances greatly increases with additional weight, and stopping will require extra effort on the controls.

- Agree on hand signals before you depart. One for, “Pull over.” Another for, “You're going too fast, slow down.” As well as one for, “I'm good, keep it up.”

- Drag your back brake to smooth out the ride at low speeds.

November 17th is the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is observed on the third Sunday in November every year. This year, it is Sunday, November 17th. It was founded in 1993 as a way to commemorate those injured or killed in road crashes and to reach out in support of the loved ones and communities of victims. It is also an opportunity to acknowledge the heroic work of first responders, medical staff and good Samaritans who try to help at the scene of a crash and who support victims and their families cope with the aftermath. The UN endorsed the World Day of Remembrance in 2005.

Millions of people are directly affected by road traffic crashes every year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that more than 34,000 people were killed in road crashes in 2012. The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) estimated that the number of motorcyclists killed in road crashes in 2012 was about 5,000, or about one seventh of the total number of deaths for that year.

Ride Dapper: Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride

“The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride (DGR) is all about dapper, classic bikes, laughter and men. It is a motorcycle ride that takes place in over 110 cities worldwide on the exact same day. It is the only event of its kind and all spawned from a single image of a gentleman on a motorcycle in a suit,” noted The Gentleman's Ride website.

Starting in 2012, The Distinguished Gentlemen's Ride was held across 64 cities worldwide and was all about spreading merriment and riding, and of course, wearing dapper clothes including tweed suits and loafers.

According to motorcycle.com, “The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride was started last year by a group of dapper vintage enthusiasts who wanted to prove that beyond the stereotypes, we're all riders. It was a fun, kitsch-y event featuring guys (and gals) in vintage garb on classic bikes that ended up taking place in 64 cities around the world. For 2013, the organizers chose to dream bigger.”

The ride takes place on September 29 worldwide (however, ride coordinators are thinking about changing this to accommodate other countries).

This year, along with celebrating merriment and riding, the ride was also about creating awareness for men's health issues and raising funds for charity. There were nearly 40 countries who hosted rides and over 5,000 riders that participated.

Riders can always ride for free but are encouraged to sign up sponsors who will pledge donations. Riders who raise over $100 will receive a DGR prize pack with stickers, patches and more. Over $260,000 was raised for prostate cancer research in 2013.

“The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride is about Classic bikes, retro, café racers, bobbers, flat trackers and customs. Organizers strive to keep it to these types of bikes to ensure the event stays small and true to its roots,” describes motorcycle.com.

2 Million Bikers Still to Ride through D.C. for 9/11

This Wednesday, bikers had hoped to ride nonstop through Washington D.C.to honor those who died in the 9/11 terror attacks and the soldiers who fought al-Qaida in Afghanistan.

The ride was announced in August and bikers immediately began the trek cross country to participate in the event. Organizers set up Facebook groups to organize bikers from 49 states and photos were posted on Twitter showing bikers along the way.

However, over the weekend, the city denied their permit request for a special nonstop ride waiving red lights, stop signs and traffic signals.

"We find this regretful for the residents and businesses of that great city, and humbly offer our apologies," organizers of the ride said Friday on Facebook. "What could have been a one or two hour ride through will now likely be an all-day event."

“We did the right thing and went through the proper channels to secure a no-stop permit to ride through your great city,” the groups said Sunday. “We wanted to ride an established route, which would have taken us past the Viet Nam Memorial to the Lincoln Memorial, across the bridge into Virginia, and that's it! We would have been completely out of Washington DC, and your city would have been back to normal.”

Even still, the group still plans to ride; only now they will have to follow all relevant traffic laws and law enforcement will be watching.

Dorothy "Dot" Robinson - The First Lady of Motorcycling

Dorothy "Dot" Robinson was a motorcyclist before she was even born. On April 22, 1912, when Dot's mother went into labor, her father, James Goulding loaded her into a sidecar and drove her to the hospital.

Her father was a sidecar designer and an amateur racer. He moved the family from Australia to America in 1918, settling in Saginaw, Michigan where he ran a motorcycle dealership.

Dot was surround by motorcycles her whole life. She grew up around motorcycles, started riding them at a young age and even met her husband, Earl Robinson, while working in her father's motorcycle shop.

“Every day after school, Earl would come to the shop to buy one part or another,” Robinson said. “By the time we were married, Earl probably had enough parts to start his own store.”

The Robinson's married in 1931 and both participated in runs and races. Dot earned her first trophy at the Flint 100 Endurance race in 1930. The couple made a record transcontinental run together in 1935 and afterwards, was asked by Harley-Davidson to run a dealership in Detroit. They ran the dealership until 1971.

In 1940, Dot became the first woman to win an AMA national competition and repeated her victory in 1946.

Also in 1940, Dot helped establish the “Motor Maids,” an organization instrumental in convincing women to try motorcycling. Motor Maids was extensively covered in a monthly feature for years in the American Motorcyclist magazine. In the 1950's Dot began wearing her famous pink outfits. She did not want to wear black traditional outfits after movies of the time portrayed motorcyclist dressed in black as outlaws.

The Robinsons sold their dealership in 1971 and traveled the world by motorcycle. Dot's favorite trip was 6,000 mile trek through Australia. Earl died in 1996, but Dot kept riding until 1998 when knee surgery made it too difficult to get on and off a motorcycle. She guessed she had totaled a million and a half miles in her years of riding.

She died in 1999 at 87 years old. Her accomplishments had earned her nickname "The First Lady of Motorcycling."

Effie and Avis: Women Motorcyclists and Adventurers

Effie and Avis Hotchkiss were a mother and daughter team that had no intention of setting any records or gaining any fame, they simply wanted to see America and thought a Harley-Davidson would be the best way to do just that.

According to an article, “Effie later said they'd had no dreams of medals, riches, or fame, they merely wanted to see America and thought the Harley-Davidson for herself and the sidecar for her mother was the best way to accomplish it. Effie's motorcycle was a Harley Davidson three-speed V-twin that she bought with a small inheritance.”

Their route began in New York and as they headed to the World's Fair in San Francisco, they traveled through Reno, Salt Lake City, Omaha, Davenport, Chicago and Milwaukee.

They were the first female team to travel cross country. They began in 1915 and the trip lasted two months. They took a tent, blankets, pots and pans, and tools.

During their trip, roads were nonexistent in places and there were no hotels, restaurants or repair shops along the way. Legend has it that at one point in the trip their tires would no longer hold air and the women stuffed strips of blankets into the tires until they could get to a repair shop.

Mother and daughter set out to see America, but they also made history by doing something that had not been done before. They paved a new pathway for future women riders.

Driving, Grilling and Fireworks... Oh My!

The 4th of July can be an exciting, fun-filled weekend, but it also holds impending dangers. Follow these tips for driving, grilling, fireworks and pets to have safe, fun holiday!

Driving

The National Safety Council (NSC) estimated that 540 traffic fatalities and 57,800 injuries may occur due to motor vehicle collisions this 4th of July weekend.

It also is estimated that 196 lives may be saved this Independence Day holiday period by buckling up, and an additional 135 lives could be saved if all wore seat belts.

Here are some tips from the NSC to stay safe this holiday weekend:

- Refrain from using cell phones while driving.

- Put your cell phone on silent or in the glove box to avoid temptation.

- Safely pull over and put the vehicle in park to take or make a call.

- Always wear a safety belt – every trip, every time.

- Make sure every passenger is wearing his or her safety belt before you begin your drive.

- Have children sit in the back and use the proper child safety seat or booster seat.

- Never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle, especially during hot weather.

- If you plan to drink, designate a non-drinking driver.

Grilling

Every year people in the U.S. are injured while using backyard charcoal or gas grills. Follow these steps from the American Red Cross to safely cook up treats for the backyard barbecue:

- Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use.

- Never grill indoors – not in your house, camper, tent, or any enclosed area.

- Make sure everyone, including the pets, stays away from the grill.

- Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, the deck, tree branches, or anything that could catch fire.

- Use the long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill to keep the chef safe.

- Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.

- Always follow the manufacturer's instructions when using grills.

Fireworks

The safest way to enjoy the 4th of July is to watch a public fireworks display conducted by professionals.

If fireworks are legal where you live and you decide to use them follow these safety tips from NSC:

- Never allow young children to handle fireworks – older children should use fireworks only under close adult supervision.

- Light fireworks one at a time, in a clear outdoor area away from onlookers, houses and flammable materials.

- Do not aim fireworks at another individual and never place any part of your body over a firework.

- Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don't go off or in case of fire, and do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks.

Here are additional tips from the Red Cross:

- Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging.

- Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection.

- Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight "a dud."

- Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets.

- Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials.

- Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks.

Pets

Don't forget about your pet's safety this weekend too! Here are some tips from WHEC-TV to keep pets safe:

1. Keep picnic food away from pets: Did you know that avocado, chocolate, onions and garlic, fat scraps, raw meat, candy, and stone fruit pits can all be dangerous for dogs to consume? Be sure to keep all July 4th picnic food in spots where dogs can't access it. Keeping food in sealed containers can help, but smart dogs can open a food storage box. Since the biggest risk to dogs in the food department is licking plates of leftovers clean, be sure to put someone on used plate patrol. It also helps to keep picnic food trash in a garbage can with a tight-fitting lid.

2. Avoid leaving open containers of alcohol around: Dogs also can get intoxicated! Just a little alcohol can cause vomiting and diarrhea for a dog. Dogs don't know that they'll get sick from lapping up that delicious cup of strawberry margarita that they found on a lawn chair. But you'll know when you've got a puking doggie! So be sure to keep alcoholic beverages out of reach of pets.

3. Keep dogs out of the road: Folks are traveling to and from parties on July 4th, often under the influence (even though it is illegal). With guests coming and going through the backyard gate, it's pretty easy for a dog or cat to get out. Perhaps keep pets indoors on July 4th? Or at least keep tabs on their whereabouts.

4. Firecrackers and pets don't mix: In addition to not shooting your own eye out, please keep pets away from fireworks and firecrackers. Also, some dogs get very scared of the loud booms of fireworks displays. Maybe leave the dog at home when you go to your local fireworks display. Allstate Rider Risk Map

In an effort to help motorcyclists stay safe, Allstate developed a program called Once is Never Enough (O.N.E) to increase motorcycle awareness.

In 2010, Allstate began the program by installing 140 temporary “Watch for Motorcycles” signs at dangerous intersections across the country. In 2012, they began replacing those signs with permanent ones.

Last year, Allstate asked its Facebook fans to help identify dangerous intersections that they have encountered. Over 1,500 people responded and helped create a database of dangerous places for motorcycles.

This year, Allstate has turned all of that information to a new direction: a Facebook application allowing riders to identify and flag dangerous areas.

The map will allow riders to help alert each other to dangerous areas and to search for dangerous areas near them.

Zero Motorcycle Presents Stealth Motorcycle

Zero Motorcycles, a California based company that has created an entire line of electric motorcycles, recently unleashed a stealth motorcycle to be used in the US Special Operations Forces.

The MMX is an all black, matte motorcycle that can go silently off-road, operate while submerged in a meter of water and is equipped with an infrared lighting system.

It will also include keyless entry, no exhaust or intake, blackout capabilities and replaceable battery packs.

According to an article on rt.com, “… the MMX motorcycle can travel quickly, efficiently, and nearly soundlessly – even on rough terrain. Zero Motorcycles developed the vehicle under US military contract. The vehicle is painted a matte black, which allows the machine to appear inconspicuous and disappear in the dark.”

The module power pack provides more than two-hours of riding per charge and can be swapped with new packs in less than a minute.

A fleet of MMX motorcycles is being evaluated under full operation testing by the US Special Operational Forces.

The MMX will not be sale for to the public; however, it is based on the MX which can be purchased starting at $9,495.00.

Women Riders on the Rise

When you think of a motorcycle driver you might imagine a big, burly man, however, times are changing and more and more women are getting in the driver's seat.

In the last 10 years, the number of women riders in Minnesota has grown more than 58 percent — from 31,576 riders in 2002 to 53,784 in 2012.

In Michigan, women riders have increased by more than 10,000 from 2008 to 2012 according to a press release from Secretary of State, Ruth Johnson.

Many women are moving from a passenger to the driver.

"I just really wanted to be in control," Holly Sellers a female rider said in an article from The Post and Courier. "It's a risky sport to ride a motorcycle. And to ride on the back, you are putting yourself in someone else's hands.

Another woman rider agreed: “I'd rather be the one in control, riding it, with the wind in my face,” said Steph Blanda to CBS Minnesota, while taking a motorcycle safety class.

And women motorcyclists seem to be safer riders than men.

“The ladies seem a little bit more…they listen a little bit better than some guys,” said safety instructor Dusty Rhodes in a CBS Minnesota newscast, who says 44 percent of his students are women.

“I run an all-ladies class during the year, because some ladies don't want to be with men. They feel intimidated, but I've got ladies that run a lot better than some guys.”

Even Harley Davidson is aiming at women riders. They offer special ladies' nights, classes and riding groups. They also offer personal customization of motorcycles to fit riders.

Facts from the Motorcycle Industry Council:

-- From 2003 to 2008, the number of women riders has increased by 52%.

-- Women own nearly 1 in 9 motorcycles.

-- In 2009, there were 11 million motorcycles in the United States, and women owned 1,155,000. That year, 27 million people operated motorcycles, and 7.3 million were women.

-- Among female motorcyclists, 40 percent are married, 36 percent have college or post-graduate degrees and 25 percent are in business or health care.

Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Did you know in 2011, 1,998 motorcyclists were involved in fatal crashes with another vehicle? And in 38% of those crashes the other vehicle was turning left while the motorcycle was going straight, passing or overtaking?

Motorcycle safety is not just for motorcyclists. It is about all motorists. It is about sharing the road and looking twice.

Here are some tips from the National Safety Council on how both motorists and motorcyclists can stay safe on the road:

Motorists

• Allow greater following distance behind a motorcycle.

• Be extra cautious in intersections. Most crashes occur when a motorist fails to see a motorcyclist and turns left in front of a motorcycle.

• Give a motorcycle the full lane width – never try to share a lane.

Motorcyclists

• Avoid riding in poor weather conditions.

• Position motorcycle in lane where you will be out of a motorist's blind spot.

• Use turn signals for every turn or lane change.

A Motorcycle Riding Easter Bunny Gets Pulled Over in California

This weekend the Easter Bunny got pulled over hopping down the bunny trail; well not actually hopping, but rather cruising on a motorcycle.

A man dressed as the Easter Bunny was riding his motorcycle to a charity event when he was pulled over by California Highway Patrol. The officer noticed that the “bunny” was not wearing a helmet, and California law requires all motorcyclists to wear a helmet. Another concern was that the costume could cause visual impairment. No citation was given, only a verbal warning. North Carolina Committee Pushes Helmet Repeal Forward

Yesterday the North Carolina House of Transportation Committee approved legislation that would repeal the state's current mandatory motorcycle helmet law.

Helmets would be optional for those who meet the following requirements; the rider must be 21 or older, have had a motorcycle endorsement for more than 1 year, and have an additional $10,000 in medical insurance.

Some government leaders in North Carolina ride themselves, but have different views on the helmet repeal. Rep. Rodney Moore, a Charlotte Democrat, who hasn't been on a motorcycle in years, explains that he always wore a helmet when he did ride, "but when you look at a person's rights, they have a right to decide whether they want to wear a helmet or not. They should be able to make a reasonable decision,” (NC House committee endorses helmets-optional law for motorcyclists, Bruce Siceloff, News Observer, http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/03/26/2781722/nc-house-committee-endorses-helmets.html). Another motorcyclist Rep. The legislation is not law yet however; it must first pass through the House of Judiciary Committee, the full House and the Senate.

Tennessee Act Proposes Helmet Choice for Motorcyclists

Tennessee's “Liberty Restoration Act” if passed would grant motorcyclists over the age of 21 the right to choose to wear a helmet or not.

The Senate Bill 0548 would require motorcyclists to meet specific requirements:

The operator must have at least $100,000 in liability insurance coverage;
At least $200,000 in medical insurance coverage;
Must complete a department of safety approved motorcycle safety education course AND
Must have been legally riding a motorcycle for at least two years.

If a motorcyclist meets all of these requirements the rider will be granted a “helmet-free” sticker at the cost of $50.

Harley-Davidson Recall of their VRSCDX 2012 & 2013 Models

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported last Thursday that Harley-Davidson will be recalling all of their 2012 VRSCDX motorcycles and some of their 2013 models.

The recall will potentially affect 2,798 bikes that were manufactured from June 14, 2011 to August 1, 2012.

The basis for the recall is that the license plate bracket screws can come loose and detach from the rear fender. The bracket can then collide with back tire causing the plate to spin and potentially sever the rear brake line, (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Recalls, http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/results.cfm?rcl_id=12V503000&searchtype=quicksearch&summary=true).

If this goes unnoticed by the owner, the rear brake could be compromised overtime and increase the possibility of an accident.

The company is notifying its dealers of the recall who will then examine and repair any motorcycles with this defect for free. The actual recall is to begin on November 5, 2012.

Some Employers Now Denying Coverage for Motorcycle Accident Related Injuries

As we all know insurance can be expensive, which is way some employers are beginning to cut some of the cost by revising their health care for their employed. Although this may be sound like a good thing for some, it can be devastating to motorcyclists.

Some companies are now excluding coverage for motorcycle and ATV injuries. This means that employees will now have to go to a private insurance provider to get coverage, in the end costing them more money.

One such company is PITT OHIO, a truck firm in Pittsburgh. The company stated in a memo to employees that the adjusting of health care policies was due to increasing costs. The changes to the policy will take effect in 2013 and will exclude coverage for what they are calling “high-risk activities,” which can be argued as motorcycling, ATV riding, and dirt bike riding, (Health Insurance Discrimination Against Motorcyclists, American Motorcyclists, AMA, Issue November 2012).

The American Motorcycle Association (AMA) stood up for riders' health insurance rights back in 1990s when several companies were excluding coverage for motorcycle and ATV riding. The AMA teamed up with the Motorcycle Riders Foundation to establish in the Congressional Record the specific intent by Congress's to abolish this discrimination as part of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act passed in 1996, (Health Insurance Discrimination Against Motorcyclists, American Motorcyclists, AMA, Issue November 2012).

Although this was recognized, the law was revised; employers were allowed to deny coverage for injuries related to motorcycling, but not to actually deny an employee health care coverage overall. This is how employers are now attempting to dodge paying for motorcycle accident related injuries.

Imre Szauter, Government Affairs Manager of AMA, is offended by the discrimination towards motorcyclists and believes that “accountants and managers are making decisions based on the bottom line that are a direct assault on our passion. For motorcyclists affected by this gross discrimination, it is effectively a death sentence for their motorcycling lifestyle,” (Health Insurance Discrimination Against Motorcyclists, American Motorcyclists, AMA, Issue November 2012).

Be sure to look over your current insurance policy for any “exclusions.” The language may be worded from specifically citing motorcycles to merely listing it as “extreme” activities. Insurance company attorneys will argue motorcycle, ATV riding and dirt bike riding as such activities in court.

L.A. Fire Department Tries Out a Motorcycle Response Team

The Los Angeles Fire Department has been testing out a potential motorcycle response team composed of five motorcycles.

The bikes are on loan from Kawaski Motor Corp. and are all equipped with a small fire extinguisher, a defibrillator, other medical supplies, as well as a GPS installed on the handlebar. The appeal of a motorcycle unit is that they will be able to get to the scene of an accident more quickly than other emergency response vehicles in order to aid injured victims, provide information to dispatchers and scout fires & other potential issues, (Los Angeles firefighters test motorcycle response unit, Frank Shyong, L.A. L.A. is not the first city to devise a motorcycle unit; other cities with heavily condensed traffic have also established units for quicker response times and as an easy form of patrolling. That is also the hope for the L.A. department as they face budget cuts and have been criticized for having response times below the national standard.

The motorcycle response team got their first opportunity to test their abilities last year when the 405 freeway, one of the busiest in the nation, was shut down for 10 miles. They were put to the test again earlier this month when a 70-acre brush fire halted traffic and caused an evacuation of the Getty Center. It was L.A. Firefighter Greg Pascola and his partner that arrived first on the scene riding in on motorcycles. It took them only 3 minutes to reach the scene arriving even before helicopters making it possible for them to hand out radios and begin mapping the fire right away, (Los Angeles firefighters test motorcycle response unit, Frank Shyong, L.A. In the future, there is the possibility for up to ten permanent motorcycles in the department with twenty-eight riders. Currently twelve firefighters have completed the training program.

The motorcycles are being viewed as an aid to increasing response time, with back up on the way; this unit would not replace any of the current department teams or equipment. As LAFD Chief Brian Cummings sees it, “Do I see the motorcycles supplanting larger vehicles? No. There's always going to be a need to bring heavy equipment and large numbers of individuals. The Basics of At Home Motorcycle Maintenance

It's always a good idea to take your motorcycle in if there seems to be a serious issue, however doing routine maintenance on your bike yourself in between visits to the mechanic helps keep it in tip-top shape. Below are some basic checks that you can perform in your own garage.

Tires & Tryes

Keep a low pressure tire gauge with you and check the pressure every time you fill up at the gas station. If a tire is under-inflated it can produce heat and could result in a blow out. Also be sure to check your tire tread, if the depth is 1-2 mm, it's time to get replacements.

Brakes

Brake fluid loses its effectiveness overtime as it absorbs moisture, so make sure to replace it every one to two years. Never let your brake pads get down to the metal as it can cause serious damage to your brake disc.

Chains and Sprockets

Be sure to lubricate your bike chain after every ride while the chain is still warm. This allows for the oil to seep in. As a general rule your bike chains should never be taut but sag between ¾” to 1 ¼”.

Shaft Drives & Belt Drives

Although both of these require very little up keep, it is recommended that every time you change the oil on your motorcycle to change both the shaft drives and belt drives to keep your bike running smoothly.

Fuel

It's important to check your fuel on a regular basis and replace it every 2 years. The typical span untreated gas can last is about 6 months. Whenever you're parking your bike for a long period of time turn the petcock (fuel tap) to off as a way of preventing any fuel from leaking into the engine.

Oil

When cool weather sets in be sure to check your oil before riding. If it's not at its high, top it up before heading out. The bike should be level when checking the oil. Always change the oil every 2-4000km, or 3-6 months, whichever is first. Lastly, change the oil filter every other time you change the oil.

Battery

Check the fluid levels in all chambers. If any are low top it up, and always use distilled or deionized water, NEVER tap water. Tap water contains minerals that are not good for the battery. The battery typically requires little maintenance unless something is damaged. Always keep it 100% charged and only recharge if you notice that the lights are dim, when starting up it sounds weak or if you haven't been out for a ride in 2 weeks.

T-Motorsport Helmet Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported on August 21, 2012 a recall by T-Motorsport of one of their helmet models due to defects that could potentially not protect the wearer.

T-Motorsport is recalling their helmet model HY-803 in size extra large. The helmets failed impact attenuation, retention and labeling requirements. Specifically the helmet's chin straps were reported as having potential to fail therefore not protecting the motorcyclist. The models also did not pass the labeling requirements, notable missing the month and year that the helmets were produced, (Motorcycle helmets recalled, may not protect rider, Associated Press, msnbc.com, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/48858491/ns/business/t/motorcycle-helmets-recalled-may-not-protect-rider/#.UE3vK7KPXmk).

The resolution has not yet been determined, but the official recall is expected to be on or around this Friday, September 14, 2012.

Many riders already know that motorcycles can get up to 60-70 miles per gallon. So most motorcyclists are saving money when filling up at the pump compared to the motorist next to them filling up their SUV. However with current high gas prices only promising to sky rocket with the devastation of Hurricane Isaac, anyone out on the road, whether in a car or on a motorcycle, is going to feel a harder hit to the wallet.

Follow some of these tips to keep more of your money in your pocket and not in your gas tank.

Don't try to impress with an unnecessarily long warm-up, it does waste gas!
Check your tire pressure. Having the recommended air in your tires for your bike will definitely help you get more miles for you buck.
Have your bike checked out. There may be an issue that has not required immediate attention, but could be affecting your miles per gallon.
Have a smooth ride. Stay at a consistent speed and don't unnecessarily slow down or go full throttle.
Lighten your riding load by emptying out your saddlebags of unnecessary items.
Have cruise control? Set it & use it!
Off-roading is great! But it does take up more fuel, if avoidable, stay on pavement.

House Members Sign Bill Banning Funds to Support Motorcycle-Only Checkpoints

During large motorcycle rallies it's not uncommon to see states implement motorcycle checkpoints. The purpose? Officials believe it helps reduce motorcycle fatalities and promote riding safety. However many motorcyclists feel the checkpoints profile motorcyclists as being dangerous or unsafe on the road. Apparently the U.S. House agrees with roughly 50 members having signed a bill banning U.S. transportation secretary from allotting funds specifically to operate motorcycle-only checkpoints.

Currently there are five states that have banned checkpoints or put restrictions on implementing them, Illinois, Virginia, California, New Hampshire and North Carolina. The bill, written by Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, “prohibits the transportation secretary from providing grants or any funds to state, county, town, township, Indian tribe, municipality or other local government for use in any program designed to check safety equipment use or create arbitrary checkpoints for motorcycle rides or passengers,” (50 U.S. Lawmakers Oppose Motorcycle-Only Checkpoints-Bill Would Prohibit Checkpoint Funding, American Motorcyclists Magazine, Issue September 2012).

The American Motorcyclist Association is pleased with the backing from the 50 House members and “thanks these members of Congress and encourages motorcyclists to also thank them for their support,” stated Wayne Allard, AMA vice present for government relations, (50 U.S. Lawmakers Oppose Motorcycle-Only Checkpoints-Bill Would Prohibit Checkpoint Funding, American Motorcyclists Magazine, Issue September 2012).

Potential for Antilock Brakes on Motorcycles

Although antilock brakes are commonplace on vehicles, they have yet to make the leap to motorcycles. However a recent study conducted by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) may pave the way for such technology. The results illustrate that motorcycles featuring ABS are 37% less likely to be involved in a fatal accident than those without.

So what's the difference? Typically motorcycles today have separate brake controls for the front and rear wheels. With a system like this in place if the brakes are hit too hard or with an incorrect distribution to the front/rear brakes, the wheel could lock causing the bike to fall. Say the opposite happens and the brakes are tapped too lightly, in the event of a crash the bike may not come to a stop in time, (The most-valuable motorcycle feature: antilock brakes, Jeff Bartlett, Consumerreports.org, http://news.consumerreports.org/cars/2012/04/the-most-valuable-motorcycle-feature-antilock-brakes.html). ABS allow motorcyclists to put full on pressure on the brakes without having to worry about the wheel locking up and falling over.

It appears that Europe has already jumped on the ABS bandwagon with a pending rule requiring the brakes on motorcycles by 2016. Here in the U.S. the major brands do include ABS, but typically only on their largest models and make them available on some mid-level bikes. There has yet to be very many at the entry-level, although it's been thought that those riding them would benefit the most. Honda does currently offer them as an option on the CBR250R for around $500, (The most-valuable motorcycle feature: antilock brakes, Jeff Bartlett, Consumerreports.org).

Manufacturers predict a potential decrease in cost of ABS on motorcycles if there is enough of a volume increase. Until the option of ABS is available to you, knowing how your brakes operate and being well trained to ride your bike are your best defenses against incorrect brake maneuvering and staying safe on the road.

Newest Inductee of Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame: H.O.G. Founder Steve Piehl

Motorcyclists travel from near and far to the legendary Sturgis Motorcycle Rally that takes place every year in South Dakota and in its 72nd year this time around the famous rally paid tribute to a legend, Steve Piehl, Harley-Davidson's director of customer experience. Piehl was inducted into the Sturgis Museum and Hall of Fame this past Wednesday.

Three months out of college Piehl held the position as Harley's general sales manager and was given the daunting task of creating a group that would promote the Harley-Davidson lifestyle to owners and potential buyers. The Harley Owners Group was created in hopes to keep the company alive as it just avoided bankruptcy in the 1980s. The group was officially launched in January 1983 H.O.G and to-date has millions of members spanning over 19 different countries.

Piehl saw the challenge of creating such a vast group as “a great opportunity in my career during a tough time for the company. We had to figure out how to create a value in the membership. From state-to-state motorcycle laws and coverage policies vary, however one thing is for sure no matter where you ride; having insurance on your bike is important. Trying to save money on insurance is always good for your wallet, but make sure you're cutting the right corners.

Below are some tips from Money Talk News on how to save on motorcycle insurance and make your policy work for you. Be sure to talk with an agent about what their company has to offer motorcyclists.

Join a motorcycle club. Some motorcycle clubs members get discounts. Beyond the automatic payback you can also swap notes with other motorcyclists and get recommendations.

Infrequent rider discount. Only ride on the exceptionally warm weekend? See if the company has discounts for part-time riders.

Have liability. This covers damages that you may cause to others in the event of an accident. It's also good to have uninsured or underinsured motorist protection coverage. If you're involved in an accident where the negligent driver does not have insurance or enough to cover your injury costs, this will cover you.

Choose the right bike. Some bikes may cost more than others to insure. Before you go and buy a new bike, make sure to talk with your agent about whether or not it will be covered under your already existing policy.

Ask! Ask your agent what discounts they offer or you are eligible for.

Blocking While Group Riding; the Legal Aspect

Whenever taking to the road safety is often at the forefront on riders mind, maybe even more so when riding in a group. Staying together on a long ride can be challenging when maneuvering through city streets and intersections. One solution motorcyclists have found to be helpful is ‘blocking.' However, this technique is actually not legal.

The way this works is a ‘blocker' is designated within the riding group, and typically rides at the back. When approaching what looks to be a dangerous stretch or busy intersection that could break up the group, the blocker pulls out to the front and blocks other oncoming traffic so that the group may proceed through as one unit.

Although this may seem like a safe alternative to splitting up the group when traffic calls for it, it's technically not legal. As Sgt. It is possible to be ticketed for blocking and potentially face civil liability if an accident does result from the directing of traffic. Another reason blocking is frowned upon by authorities is because blockers may not have the equipment or training that is typically utilized when directing traffic. Besides not having legal authority to direct traffic, safety remains to be a concern. Motorists still may not see or obey a blocker, nor understand what is going on and proceed anyway.

Of course, there are exceptions. For example, groups riding for an event or marathon can obtain a permit to block. In order to receive a permit a group must go through the Department of Transportation. The permit will include an endorsement from the police, local authorities, and insurance.

All-in-all blocking as Lenny Parker, safety officer for the Albany-Schenectady Hog Club, clarifies is, “not done to be obnoxious, but it's safer to block the road so people don't get into the middle of a group of motorcyclists. City of Chicago Being Sued Over Motorcyclist's Death

Last June Ronald Bizeau Jr., 25, was killed on his motorcycle due to what his mother declares as the negligent posting of a traffic control sign. The family is now suing the city of Chicago for their loss.

The suit states that a sign placed to notify motorists that the lane going south on Harlem Avenue near Myrtle Avenue was closed due to construction played a role in the cause of the accident. Bizeau was then tossed from his bike, resulting in serious injuries and was taken to Advocate Luther General Hospital only to be pronounced dead later that day at 1:40am.

The family's great grief and expensive funeral charges are the reasons behind filing the suit says Bizeau's mother Nancy Bizeau-Luchesi.

Allstate Insurance Installs WATCH FOR MOTORCYCLE Traffic Signs as Part of Their ONE Program

Ride through Baltimore lately? The next time you do you may notice at busy intersections new yellow diamond shaped traffic signs that state WATCH FOR MOTORCYCLES. These signs are all part of the effort Allstate Insurance Company has been putting forth to reduce the number of motorcycle accidents at intersections.

Allstate developed their “Once is Never Enough” (ONE) program two years ago, a campaign to promote drivers to look twice for motorcycles. Since then the program has installed 100 of their WATCH FOR MOTORCYCLES signs temporarily from 2010-2011 in over 30 different cities throughout the U.S.

The signs now are being installed in cities at their most dangerous intersections as permanent reminders to look twice. The current one in Baltimore is at President and Pratt. Allstate works directly with local traffic authorities to pinpoint the most congested/dangerous intersections in their city to have the signs placed, then donates and installs them. Intersections are the worst areas for motorcycle-vehicle accidents as according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 46% of all motorcycle accidents involving another vehicle resulting in death occur at intersections.

The goal is to reduce motorcyclist fatalities at intersections, and as these signs are installed one-by-one awareness brought directly to the streets, hopefully grabbing motorists' attention to LOOK TWICE SAVE A LIFE.

AMA Hosts Vintage Motorcycle Days in Ohio

Have a thing for vintage bikes? Then you won't want to miss out on the AMA (American Motorcycle Association) Vintage Motorcycle Days in Ohio!

The event is taking place from July 20-22 at the Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. Each day offers different racing events, shows, and much more! Friday hosts the Ride ‘Em Don't Hide ‘Em Show which starts off with participants riding a lap around the course, then heading out for a 25-mile ride to return at 2pm for the judging. Professional Boxer Paul Williams Paralyzed after Motorcycle Accident in Georgia

Boxer Paul Williams was in a motorcycle accident in Marietta Georgia this past Sunday and is now paralyzed from the waist down.

Williams was in the neighborhood for his brother's wedding later that afternoon. While maneuvering along a curve Williams' attempted to dodge a vehicle in the lane next to him. Police say his speed was too fast to make the curve and hit the embankment. Williams fell of his bike landing on his back and head, severing his spinal cord. Fellow boxer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was scheduled to fight Williams on September 15 in Las Vegas, but is now canceled says Williams' manager George Peterson. Peterson has been visiting and in contact with Williams and reports that “from the waist down, he has absolutely no movement. He's in very good spirits, though. He still believes he's going to fight again.”

His long time promoter Dan Goossen has confirmed the cancellation of the event and states that “right now, there's no thinking about his fights right now except for the fight that's facing Paul right now – get movement back in his body and keep the movement that's above his waist. Goossen is referring to the fact that Williams has had anything but an ordinary boxing career. He is considered to be one of the most versatile and remarkable in the boxing world as he has competed in three different weight classes at 147-pounds 6-foot 2-inch. California Driver Texts while Driving Results in Motorcyclist's Death & 5 Years in Jail

In the State of California a driver who was texting while driving hit and killed a motorcyclist has now been sentenced to five years in prison.

Sequoia Jones, 23, was driving and texting in her Volkswagen Beetle in Sacramento on October 24 when she sideswiped Robert Wilson, 64, on his motorcycle. The collision knocked Wilson off his bike, resulting in his death after another car ran over his body, (Texting Driver Gets Prison Time in Death of Motorcyclist: But In Another State, Community Service Is Ordered, American Motorcyclist, June 2012).

Jones was charged with vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run to which she pleaded no contest on March 12 and then was sentenced to five years in jail.

In a similar case in North Carolina Andrew James Watkins, 25, pleaded guilty in 2011 after his driving while texting resulted in the death of motorcyclist Joel Severson, 39. Watkins sentence did not include the same amount of jail time however, he was given a 60-day suspension of jail term, perform 200 hours of community service and a $1,000 court fine, (Texting Driver Gets Prison Time in Death of Motorcyclist: But In Another State, Community Service Is Ordered, American Motorcyclist, June 2012).

AMA Government Affairs Manager Imre Szauter stated on the matter “these are very tragic cases in which texting while driving caused needless deaths. Our condolences go out to the Wilson and Severson families. May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month!

This is the month! May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month! Whether you are a long time rider or just bought your first bike last week, THE Motorcycle Lawyer thinks it's always a good idea to brush up on some safety tips before hitting the open road!

Always be alert! BUT especially at intersections. Roughly 50% of all motorcycle-vehicle accidents occur at intersections. The most common is a vehicle turning left in front of a motorcycle, so always be prepared to act quickly.

Glancing in your mirrors before switching lanes or coming to a stop could prevent a rear-end collision.

Watch the road a distance ahead of you so you are aware of any hazards or traffic issues before you are upon them.

So many motorcyclists ride by this common tip: “Assume you are invisible to other motorists on the road and operate your motorcycle accordingly.” Ride to be seen, take up a lane and ride in it where you will be noticed by motorists. Headlights are a must during the day and night. Wearing reflective and bright clothing helps any motorcyclist be seen.

Ride at a speed that is appropriate for the road conditions, i.e. weather, traffic, or construction.

Treat other vehicles & motorcycles with courtesy and respect.

Avoid tailgating and riding in between lanes.

Always use signals when necessary.
