Some Precautions for California Motorcycle Riders from The Motorcycle Lawyer

The state of California can be a very dangerous place for those who ride motorcycles because of the negligence of the drivers of cars and trucks. The big cities are: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Long Beach, Oakland, Anaheim, and Bakersfield which are the most populated in the order listed. The major intersections that have the most accidents are in generally in Los Angeles due to it’s size. Every year this city lists the top intersections and many of them are worst than any state wide: Motor Dr / Monte Mar Dr; Franklin Av / Beachwood Dr ; Vanowen St / Sepulveda Bl ; Fairfarx Av / 3rd St ; Santa Monica Bl / Colby Av. Here are some other of the states worst intersections for all accident including motorcycle crashes: (Oakland) 42 St. / Telegraph Ave ; (Berkeley) Russell Blvd / College Ave ; ( Santa Rosa ) Pacific Ave / Mendocino ; ( Concorde ) Detroit Avenue / Monument Blvd ; ( Fairfax ) Baywood Canyon Rd / Sir Francis Drake Blvd.

More than 4 million drivers register a motorcycle and many hit the interstate across the board. Of all the accidents on the highway, those who die in a motorcycle accident are among 5% of all accidents on the road. However, they are one of the smallest numbers of licensed vehicles. About a quarter of all accidents are single in nature, the rest of the crashes are involved with an automobile. It does not take much for a car to knock over a road bike. The automobile will be left standing. The bike is often hit in the front causing it to loose control. Many times the person is thrown from the bike and severely hurt or killed.

It has been proven that one third of all motorcycle accidents where a car was involved is because of the vehicle interfering into the space of the motorcycle while on the road. Many times the vehicle does not notice he is there because of the "out of sight... out of mind" attitude. The car driver will see the biker as an intruder instead of a person who is sharing the road. Possibly, if the law was as strict with motorist as they were tractor trailer drivers, fewer drivers would hit some one on a motorcycle.

Our motorcycle law firm would like to do everything possible to prevent more fatalities and reduce injuries. While the rain and snow are not a factor in motorcycle accidents most of the time, two out of a hundred crashes are because of the weather. Some times an accident will happen because of a mechanical issue. This will rank almost in three percent of the accidents across the board. Car drivers need to eliminate as many distractions on the road to make their ride safer. Riding in some of the busiest cities will increase the accident rankings. Every major town has some of the worst intersections in the state and are known across the country.

Those who ride in the evening need to avoid dark clothing and make sure all of their lights work. The federal government, since the 1970’s, has required motorcycle headlamps to come on automatically upon starting the engine because the supporting data showed that lights used in the day may decrease the chances of an accident. Mirrors on the bike are important and need to be in good working order. Many motorcycle accidents happen at low speeds between 30 mph to 40 mph.

The answer may not be found in the number of motorcycle accidents that become fatal each year. Instead, laws that keep bikers more safe on the road may reduce the accident ration by making auto drivers more accountable in the process. Those who get their regular drivers license (ie, car) for the first time need to be aware of the importance to watch for those who are riding motorcycles. Tractor trailer drivers go through rigorous training before they get on the road. Perhaps, people who seek to get a license should be forced to go through similar training for the sake of reducing motorcycle wrecks.
