Florida -- the Sunshine State -- offers some of the best motorcycle trips on this continent in terms of scenery and activities for bikers, not to mention the near perfect weather. Near is the operative word when describing Florida’s weather. Winters offer the most pleasant riding conditions with temperatures hovering in the high 60s to mid 70s for the most part. However, a fast moving cold front can drop temperatures to freezing accompanied by gusty winds within an hour. This is usually short lived with the temperatures rising within a couple days if not sooner. One factor that makes winters enjoyable is the lower humidity levels with very little rain. We all know that weather can contribute to motorcycle wrecks.
Summers in Florida are generally quite humid and hot with average temperatures in the high 80s to mid 90s. Temperatures remain relatively constant, however, this is also the rainy season. Floridians are accustomed to the frequent and almost predictable timing of the rain showers that seem to develop in the mid afternoon. These thunderstorms can be ominous with high cumulonimbus clouds producing a deluge of rain with an abundance of lightning like no other. It is not unusual to register 2 inches of rain in an hour. Then, like magic, it has passed as fast as it has arrived, and within an hour the streets are dry and the only evidence of its passing is the welcome drop in temperature and fresh smelling air. Usually this is a singular timely occurrence.
During the summer months the “Love bugs” take flight. The little pest is harmless, and found in swarms in the country for the most part. If your trip takes you through the countryside it is advisable to wear a shield should you encounter them. They are scattered but ever present. If a shield isn’t available, make sure to keep your mouth shut when riding your motorcycle or you may get a veritable feast quite unexpectedly. For this reason, locals curtail the majority of riding to the coastal areas where they are few, if any love bugs. This is where the majority of bikers ride anyhow.
