Major Motorcycle Rallies Boost Organ Donations and Transplants, Study Reveals

Published on November 29, 2022

Boston, Massachusetts (The Motorcycle Lawyer News) - Major motorcycle rallies in the United States have been associated with an increase in organ donations and transplant procedures, according to a retrospective cross-sectional study. The findings suggest that measures to ensure safety during these events should be prioritized.

Compared to the four weeks preceding and following these rallies, the study showed an estimated 21% more organ donors per day during the rallies, as well as 26% more transplant recipients per day. These findings were published in JAMA Internal Medicine by Anupam Jena, MD, PhD, and colleagues.

"This equates to approximately one additional donor or six additional transplant recipients in these regions for every two major motorcycle rallies," noted the researchers.

The study indicates that the surge in organ donation and transplantation is potentially due to an increase in motorcycle use in areas where these rallies take place. Throughout the average nine-day duration of a motorcycle rally, the net effect resulted in 14% more organ donors and 19% more transplant recipients per day compared to non-rally dates. The study's authors added that no increase in the number of organ donations or transplants was observed during motorcycle rally weeks in distant regions without rallies, further indicating that the phenomenon was associated with the rallies themselves.

The study, conducted by Jena and his colleagues, analyzed data from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients involving 10,798 organ donors aged 16 and older who died in motor vehicle crashes and 35,329 organ recipients from these donors between March 2005 and September 2021.

The study included data from seven major rallies, such as the Atlantic Beach Bikefest in South Carolina, Bikes, Blues & BBQ in Arkansas, Daytona Bike Week in Florida, Laconia Motorcycle Week in New Hampshire, Myrtle Beach Bike Week Spring Rally in South Carolina, the Republic of Texas Biker Rally in Austin, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota.

Motorcyclists who do not wear helmets have shown a threefold increase in becoming organ donors following fatal crashes, compared to passenger vehicle motorists. Furthermore, in states where motorcycle helmets were previously mandated by law, the repeal of such legislation was linked to higher rates of crash-related deceased organ donation.

In an accompanying editorial, Grace Yuan Zhang, MD, from the University of California San Francisco, and Mitchell Katz, MD, from NYC Health + Hospitals in New York City, emphasized the importance of safety in high-risk activities and encouraged participants to specify their willingness to donate organs in the event of their death.

Help for Injured Texas Riders

Motorcycle cases are different from ordinary car accident claims. Riders are more likely to suffer serious injuries, and insurance companies may try to blame the rider before the facts are fully developed. A strong case starts with the crash details, the available evidence, the medical record, the insurance coverage, and the way the crash has affected the rider's life.

The goal is simple: understand what happened, identify the evidence that matters, and help you decide the next step before insurance pressure or missed details hurt the claim.

What to Do After a Texas Motorcycle Crash

After a crash, get medical care, keep copies of paperwork, photograph visible injuries and vehicle damage when possible, save insurance letters, and avoid giving broad recorded statements before you understand your rights. If there are witnesses, video, police reports, damaged gear, or scene photos, those details may matter.

Every case is different. A case review can help identify what timing, insurance, and evidence questions may apply to your situation.
