Georgia's Diversity Makes it a Great State to Ride Your Motorcycle- But Dangerous as Well, says The Motorcycle Accident Lawyer

Georgia is a beautiful and very diverse state – perfect for motorcycle riding. From the beaches along the coast to the twisties in the mountains, Georgia has it all. There are many lovely roads to ride in Georgia. Unfortunately, there are also many dangerous roads and intersections in Georgia that you should avoid, or maintain extra vigilance on so as to prevent motorcycle accidents.

As always, you should ride with more care when riding through a populated city than in the country or through a small town. The most populated city in Georgia is the state’s capital, Atlanta and the five counties in its metro region. After that, the most populous cities are Augusta, Columbus, Savannah and Athens. All of these cities have their challenges for motorcyclists.

By far, the most dangerous intersection in the entire state for motorcycles is in the heart of Atlanta at the junction of 14th street and the city’s main drag – Peachtree Street. Both of these streets are at least five lanes and the way 14th street forks off of Peachtree encourages high speed turns and left turns without yielding.

A similar intersection a little further south is 10th and Piedmont. Piedmont is one way heading north at this point which leads to more left turn issues, failure to yield and motorists turning the wrong way onto Piedmont.

Augusta has two intersections that should be avoided or taken with extreme care. One is the corner of Sibley Road and North Leg. Many of the motorcycle wrecks there are rear end collisions, which for a motorcyclist can prove fatal. The other bad crossroad in Augusta is Gordon Highway and Old Savannah Road. The high speed nature of both of these roads increases the danger.

In Columbus, the one to watch out for is where Macon Road intersects with Interstate 185. There is a bad merge situation created there and with the high speeds on the Interstate, it can be very tricky for the motorcyclist.

Savannah has some of the most beautiful riding in the state, but also has its share of dangerous intersections. Skidaway Road and Victory Drive tops the list in Savannah as it is extremely congested with turns in all directions from both roads. Abercorn and Montgomery Crossroad is another dangerous intersection in Savannah, but care should be taken everywhere on Abercorn due to the volume of traffic and unregulated left turns.

Finally, in Athens, there is no one main dangerous intersection to avoid, but the entire stretch of highway 78 through the city should be avoided. If the Georgia Bulldogs are playing, the whole city is one big dangerous intersection.

The state of Georgia has many great places to ride. Motorcyclists come from all over the country to ride the twisty roads of Georgia’s mountains. One of the best is known as Georgia’s Dragon, named after the nearby Dragon’s Tail on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. This ride starts in Dahlonega and runs up Highway 60, which is very curvy, then turn right onto Route 180, known as Wolfpen Gap Road, which is even curvier. This road has one 360 on it where you curve beneath the road through a short tunnel. This road ends in US 19, where you take a right back to Dahlonega. Dahlonega is a great destination in its own rite with many beautiful sites. Also, just before the turnoff onto Route 180 is a small motorcycle camp where you can rest, stretch your legs, and talk riding with other motorcyclists. At this camp you can learn of the many other beautiful loops in this area.

A nice ride if you are stuck in Atlanta and just want to get outside the city limits is on Hwy 20 and Hwy 92. These two highways create an almost complete circle around the city and pass through many beautiful small towns. You can start this tour from anywhere in the city and go in either direction. Highway 20 runs from Canton, northwest of the city, east through Cumming, then southeast through Sugar Hill and Lawrenceville. It then turns south and runs down to Conyers and then turns back southwest into McDonough before coming to an end near Hampton due south of the city. At that point, it’s a few mile run down Hwy 19 to pick up Hwy 92 close to Griffin. This road runs northwest up to Douglasville, then turns north until it passes through Kennesaw. It then turns almost due east toward Roswell. At that point you can head back north to pick up 20 or call it a day and ride south back into the city.

If you find yourself down near the coast, you will find many motorcycles on Interstate 95 heading south toward the beaches of Florida, especially near bike weeks in Daytona. But there is a much better way to head north or south close to the coast and that is Hwy 17. This scenic road zigzags back and forth, crossing I95 several times, passing through some beautiful small towns and past scenic marshland. Once you get to Savannah going north, stay on 17 to cross the Talmadge Memorial Bridge which crosses high over the Savannah River giving you gorgeous views of the river and surrounding areas.

Back to the mountains for another great run in the northwest corner of the state is the ride on Georgia Route 193 and 136 to Cloudland Canyon. You begin this ride in Lafayette and head west on 93 and 193 until it intersects Georgia Route 136. You then turn left onto 136 and follow it into Cloudland Canyon State Park. This park has some great twisties and views into and out of the Canyon. There are places to eat near the park.

Georgia has one of the most diverse geographies in the nation with arid flatlands in the southwest to the swamps and golden marshes of the southeast, up through the foothills and finally into the Blue Ridge Mountains which offers some of the best riding in the country. So The Motorcycle Attorney advises to be careful, keep the shiny side up, and avoid those dangerous intersections and you will be in for the ride of your life in Georgia.
