These are some of the best bike rides in Colorado

Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, wide open spaces and spectacular scenery make the state a favorite destination for motorcycle riders of all ages. From the foothills near Denver and Colorado Springs to the Alpine scenery of Telluride and Durango, Colorado offers plenty of attractions for casual getaways or serious road trips.

Some tips for navigating Colorado’s scenic routes: Take foul weather gear for sudden rain (or even snow storms at high altitudes). Gas up before you go – on some of these rides, towns are far apart. Watch for wildlife – Colorado’s abundant mule deer, elk and bighorn sheep don’t always stick to the side of the road. Take plenty of film and take your time. You’ll find yourself gawking at the scenery around every curve.

Mount Evans Road (Scenic Denver Motorcycle Ride)
Near Denver, head up the highest paved road in the United States to the top of Mount Evans. Colorado 5, also known as Mount Evans Road, is an expansive, winding blacktop stretch that takes you from deep mountain forests to up above treeline, where you’ll literally be above almost everyone at almost 14,000 feet above sea level. Along the way you’ll pass lines of laboring bicyclists and herds of grazing mountain goats. At the end of the road, you can take the short hike to the top of Mount Evans. The views from this road are unbelievable. The National Parks Service administers the area and charges a small toll to ride the road. Seniors get a discount. Visitors’ centers at the start of the road and halfway up are a good place to stop for a break and to learn more about the area.

Peak-to-Peak Highway (Scenic Denver Motorcycle Ride)
Another great Denver area ride is the Peak-to-Peak Highway, which meanders through several mountain canyons from the old gold-rush town of Blackhawk to Estes Park. Following Highways 6, 119, 72 and 7 you’ll follow curving mountain roads through spectacular canyons, across the Continental Divide, through a series of small towns worth exploring, from the casino-filled streets of Blackhawk, through hippie-haven Nederland to Estes Park, with its Victorian architecture and bugling elk. This is a good day trip with plenty of good places to stop to eat or explore. In summer, you’ll see a patchwork quilt of colorful wildflowers, while in the fall the mountains are awash in golden aspen. Watch for deer or elk on the highway.

San Juan Skyway (Scenic Colorado Loop Ride)
If winding mountain roads and spectacular peaks are your idea of heaven, you won’t want to miss the San Juan Skyway. Make a loop of about 225 miles and take in the towns of Ridgway, Ouray, Durango, Cortez and Telluride. You’ll travel four major mountain passes and see why this area is known as the Switzerland of America. All the towns along the way provide good excuses to stop and stretch your legs, and the highway offers plenty of pullouts for taking pictures. This is a popular route in summer and fall, so you’ll have plenty of company, but rarely is traffic a real problem. The mountaintops hold snow well into July, and the fall color draws photographers from around the globe. Do the loop in one day, or break it up with overnights in one of the towns on the route.

Grand Mesa Road, CO Motorcycle Ride
The Grand Mesa road from Delta to Palliside takes you across the Colorado high desert, navigating winding canyons and deep green forests. About half the route crosses through national forest and other public lands, so you won’t encounter much traffic. In summer you’ll have easy access to dozens of wineries and orchards in the area. This is a good ride to take with Grand Junction as your base. You can also make a side trip through Unaweep Canyon, where red rock formations and remnants of the area’s mining history offer plenty to see and photograph.

Colorado National Monument Motorcycle Ride
The Colorado National Monument encompasses a swath of Colorado River Canyon featuring sheer red rock cliffs, sparkling river water and plenty of opportunities for viewing deer, elk and bighorn sheep. The 22-mile route along Rim Rock Drive through the park passes numerous unusual rock formations. The road has 14 turnouts with interpretive displays. You can camp within the park if you like, or stay in Fruita or Grand Junction, at either end of the park. Expect to pay a small entrance fee.
